IU Health to build hospital in West Lafayette, state-of-the-art cancer center in Lafayette

July 11, 2025

The Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project is a $214 million investment in ensuring access to healthcare, close to home.

The Indiana University Health Board of Directors has approved a $214-million investment to build two new healthcare facilities in Greater Lafayette and to renovate an existing facility, ensuring residents in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties continue to have access to essential healthcare services, close to home.

The three-part Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project will bring the city’s first hospital to West Lafayette, a state-of-the-art cancer center to the Arnett Hospital campus in Lafayette and a substantial expansion to the number of specialty medical services available in West Lafayette.

“Several years ago, we recognized that Greater Lafayette was on the cusp of significant growth. We planted our flag early, confident in the community’s potential and committed to being part of its future” says Art Vasquez, president of IU Health’s West Region. “Today, we’re proud to announce the next bold step in that journey with the Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project. This is a major milestone, not just for our organization, but for our community.”

This project builds on more than a century of commitment by IU Health in Greater Lafayette, beginning with the establishment of the Arnett-Crockett Clinic in 1922.

“IU Health has brought many firsts to Tippecanoe County: the first multi-specialty clinic, the first cardiology and pediatric departments and the first urgent care. Now, we’re preparing to bring another milestone—the first hospital in West Lafayette,” says Dennis Murphy, IU Health president and chief executive officer. “Throughout every era, IU Health has consistently followed through—investing in infrastructure, talent and innovation to meet the evolving needs of the communities we proudly serve.”

Construction on both the cancer center and hospital is expected to begin in 2026, with both facilities projected to open in 2028.

Cancer center

The Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project will relocate the existing IU Health Cancer Center – Lafayette from its current location on 26th Street in Lafayette to a new state-of-the-art facility on the Arnett Hospital campus. The relocation of the Cancer Center to the hospital campus will create a more integrated patient care experience across the healthcare continuum.

The new 55,000-square foot Cancer Center will have room to provide essential infusion therapies to 32 patients simultaneously—a 23% increase over the current facility—in an environment that is intentionally designed to support whole-person care for patients’ bodies, minds and spirits through integrative services such as art therapy, massage therapy, music therapy, support groups, yoga for relaxation and spiritual care.

Additionally, the new Cancer Center will include an oncology rapid access clinic and will house two linear accelerators, advanced radiation therapy technologies and precision genomics services—delivered through a multidisciplinary care approach and the clinical expertise of a team of board-certified physicians.

West Lafayette hospital

The full-service IU Health West Lafayette hospital will offer a 24/7 Emergency department, inpatient care, multiple operating rooms, a helipad for emergency transportation and advanced imaging and laboratory services.

IU Health West Lafayette Hospital will expand access to preventive care, enhance specialty capabilities and improve outcomes across the continuum of care—bringing IU Health’s leading-edge treatments and whole-person approach closer to home for residents of West Lafayette. IU Health is the only health system with plans to offer inpatient hospital care in West Lafayette.

Integrated specialty care in West Lafayette

Concurrently, IU Health will also undertake an 8,000-square foot renovation at the IU Health Medical Offices on Sagamore Parkway West in West Lafayette. This renovation will bring access to specialty medical care to West Lafayette through the establishment of a multispecialty clinic in the building.

To improve access to timely and convenient care, IU Health will also establish a new rapid access cardiology clinic at the same location, as well as a walk-in orthopedic clinic for same-day evaluation and treatment.

A commitment to growing together

Tippecanoe County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, with Greater Lafayette driving that growth as the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States.

“As Greater Lafayette continues to grow and thrive—with new investment and new industry announced regularly—so does the need for essential healthcare services,” says Vasquez.

“This project represents IU Health’s commitment to growing with our community, but it isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about fulfilling a promise we made years ago and meeting the needs of a growing community with care that’s close to home.”

Together, the Greater Lafayette Community Growth Project will bring more than 210 new full-time healthcare jobs to the community by 2030, including 29 physicians, 10 advanced practice providers and 69 nurses, along with 100-plus other essential healthcare positions.

IU Health is the region’s most comprehensive healthcare provider, serving a 10-county area and delivering care close to home in more than 40 essential specialties and subspecialties—from primary care to cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery, infectious diseases and urology.
