Living Kidney Donor Submission - Thank you

Thank you for considering living kidney donation at IU Health Transplant. After careful review of the information you provided on the donor application, we cannot accept you as a kidney donor. Any of the following list of conditions automatically excludes you as a candidate:

  • Altruistic donor — Donors that do not have a prior relationship with the recipient are ruled out if they:
    • Are less than 21 years old
    • Have high blood pressure
  • Undergoing dialysis
  • Diabetic being treated with insulin
  • Heart Disease — Coronary Artery Disease or Congestive Heart Failure
  • Melanoma
  • Breast Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Lupus
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Nicotine use including but not limited to smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco. The use of nicotine products can increase the risk of surgical complications and other health related concerns. You are 5 times more likely to develop a hernia post donation with the use of nicotine. Once you have stopped using tobacco/nicotine products for at least 1 month, you may complete the online form again. If you are struggling to quit, you should contact your primary care physician for assistance. You may also call 800.QUIT.NOW (800.784.8669).
  • BMI >35 — The goal weight for surgery is a body mass index of 30 or less. You may begin the donor evaluation if your BMI is less than 35. Any type of gastric banding, gastric bypass or bariatric surgery excludes you as a possible candidate. If you are overweight, you are at increased risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. These are two of the leading causes of kidney failure. Once your BMI is under 35, you may complete the online form again. If you are struggling to lose weight or have hit a plateau, you should contact your primary care physician for assistance.

If you have any questions, please call 800.382.4602, Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4 pm EDST to speak to a member of the living donor team.
