Financial Assistance Policy

To be considered for financial assistance, please complete and submit an application for financial assistance.

Eligibility for financial assistance is based on your household income, number of members in your household, if you have insurance and, in some situations, your assets. If you are uninsured and your household income is less than or equal to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and are admitted for treatment via a hospital’s emergency department, direct admission from a physician’s office, or transfer from another hospital facility, you may be eligible to receive financial assistance for your medical bills in an amount up to 100%. Uninsured patients will not be charged more than the amounts generally billed for emergency or other medically necessary care to individuals who have insurance.


    IU Health may determine that you qualify for financial assistance based on the financial assistance policy.

    The Language Services Department is available to assist with translation services in 200 languages 24/7 year-round.

    Note: Complete Financial Assistance Applications should include all required attachments and information in order to be considered valid. Patients may also have to fulfill a non-refundable deposit prior to the review of their application. Indiana University Health may determine that you qualify for additional assistance and aid you in the completion of an application for state assistance programs including Medicaid and the Healthy Indiana Plan. If financial assistance is approved, you will receive written notification and an updated statement with your reduced balance, if applicable.

    IU Health’s Financial Assistance Policy does not cover individual physician charges. A listing of all providers who render services at an IU Health facility and whose individual professional charges are not covered by this Financial Assistance Policy, along with a list of any services that are not covered by this Financial Assistance Policy, are available here and was updated on June 30, 2018.
