Pelvic health rehabilitation helps patients regain strength and confidence

Pelvic health rehabilitation helps patients regain strength and confidence

August is Pelvic Dysfunction Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about a common but often misunderstood health issue. Pelvic health rehabilitation helps people manage symptoms such as pelvic pain, muscle weakness and discomfort during everyday activities.

Pelvic dysfunction can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. Specialized therapy can restore function and improve quality of life through personalized care and education.

“After listening to just a few women, I realized how common some of these issues are and how often these complaints are dismissed as ‘normal,’” says Rohini Gawali, PT, MHS, Cert DN. “I’ve seen patients go from avoiding laughter to living confident, active lives.”

Rachel Noyes Finley, PT, DPT, adds, “I have always been most motivated by impacting the quality of life of my patients, and what better way to do that than focus on some of their most intimate issues that so many are afraid to talk about.”

One of Gawali and Finley’s patients began therapy after giving birth. “Six weeks postpartum, I wasn’t able to lift my twins in their car seats,” she says. “After therapy, I am a completely changed person, I have gotten so much stronger and feel more comfortable lifting up my kids”

Another said, “I just had no idea how interconnected this all was and how it could impact other parts of my body. I wish I had known sooner that pelvic floor therapy was an option for me.”

Life before therapy as “limited,” said a third patient, “Leaving the house even was difficult. I stopped walking or going to exercise classes.” Now, she’s “much more confident” and encourages others: “Don’t be hesitant, this is the best thing that I’ve done for my health.”
