High-Risk Pregnancy Care

Every expectant mother hopes for an easy, worry free pregnancy. Your pregnancy may be considered high risk if you or your baby has a condition that increases the chances of a health problem during or after birth. These conditions may be pre-existing before you became pregnant or they may develop during your pregnancy. Our relationship with each patient is designed in collaboration with the referring provider and the specific needs of the patient.

Our specialized care for you may include a co-management or consultation with our specialist and your primary obstetric caregiver. Our Maternal Fetal Specialist is part of the IU Health OB/GYN Provider team & Riley Maternal Fetal Medicine Provider team. IU Health Ball Maternal Fetal Health has extended support services with genetic counselors, neonatologist and perinatal palliative care services.

Specialized Prenatal Testing

Our care for you may include prenatal testing for genetic problems such as neural tube defects, ventral wall defects, Down syndrome, chromosomal problems and congenital heart problems. Diagnosing a birth defect in the womb allows you and the doctor to work together to plan you pregnancy care. If any problems are detected, our team will be available to offer a variety of individual counseling and support services.

  • First trimester screening ultrasounds with NIPT
  • Genetic amniocentesis
  • Genetic counseling

Specialized Diagnostic Ultrasound

Our specialized care for you may include high resolution imaging services. Ultrasounds are safe for both you and your baby with no known risk. We perform ultrasounds at all gestational ages. Our best opportunities for screening for abnormalities or anomalies are during the first trimester around 11 weeks to 13 weeks and during the second trimester with a complete fetal survey around 18 weeks to 22 weeks.

The advanced ultrasound equipment enables staff to examine in detail the baby’s brain, heart and other vital organs. Diagnosing a birth defect in the womb allows you and your doctor to work together to plan your pregnancy care.

Some maternal high-risk conditions could also need closely monitored with regular ultrasounds. If any problems are detected, our specialized team will be available to offer a variety of individual counseling and support services. We have been granted accreditation in obstetric ultrasound by the AIUM Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council.

  • First trimester screening ultrasounds
  • Complete fetal anatomy ultrasounds
