Critical Care Transport

Critical care support, delivered when and where you need it most.

If you suffer a serious, life-threatening injury, time is of the essence. IU Health LifeLine provides critical care ground and air transport services.

These services feature the same equipment found in our critical care hospital rooms. You'll receive the care you need as quickly as possible.

Emergency Care Transportation

If you’ve experienced a traumatic injury, IU Health LifeLine gives you immediate access to a team of critical care nurses and paramedics. This team will be in constant contact with the team of physicians, surgeons and staff waiting at the hospital.

Depending on the type of injury you’ve experienced, you may have one or more of the following services:

Blood Transfusions

LifeLine is the only transport service in Indiana that is approved to carry and administer blood transfusions in transit. This lowers the risk of hemorrhagic shock, the biggest cause of death related to traumatic injury.

Our staff receives special training from trauma surgeons to recognize signs of shock. Our staff also uses ultrasound to identify internal bleeding.

Cardiovascular Critical Care

When a traumatic injury involves the heart, LifeLine team members use several methods to keep vital signs as stable as possible. They will do this until you arrive at the hospital.

All LifeLine vehicles include equipment that provides reliable and fast lab results with a small blood sample.

Cloud EHR

Cloud is a wireless health records system that securely delivers medical information from the critical care transport team to the hospital. Our trauma physicians at the hospital can access medical images and other information so they're prepared for your arrival.

Neonatal & Pediatric Transport

LifeLine vehicles have special equipment for newborns and children. They feature special beds for infants. These beds keep infants at the right temperature with enough oxygen, fluids and medications they need. Our staff also receives extra certifications to care for our young patients. We even keeps stuffed animals on board to help children relax.

Respiratory Support

LifeLine vehicles are equipped with special respiratory equipment, including:

  • Medical grade air compressors
  • High frequency ventilators
  • Liquid oxygen

This supports respiratory function during transportation. This is only essential to avoid shock and can reduce damage to brain and other organs.

24/7 Transfer Center

Our transfer center is open at all hours. This allows for quick, seamless transition between hospitals. The communication staff at the transfer center collect health information, dispatch LifeLine and notify the appropriate staff that a patient is on the way. This increases the speed and efficiency of care.
