Heart and Vascular Care Specialties 

The Adult Cardiovascular Genetic Counseling Program 

The Adult Cardiovascular Genetic Counseling program at IU Health provides a full range of pre-test and post-test genetic counseling services, primarily for adults who have a diagnosis of, or are at risk for developing, inherited cardiovascular disease. 

The Advanced Lipid Program 

The Advanced Lipid program at IU Health is the only clinic in the state of Indiana that is focused on familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). 90% of individuals with FH in the United States are currently undiagnosed. 

The Aortopathy Screening Program

Patients with aortic disease often require surgical repair of aneurysm. Once identified, these patients are offered an opportunity to undergo genetic evaluation for cause and hereditary risk. 

Sports Cardiology

The Center for Cardiovascular Care in Athletics at Indiana University Health provides complete sports cardiology care for athletes of all ages and skill levels. The program utilizes a Sports Cardiology Performance Lab to fully assess patients for any possible cardiovascular disorders, while also providing critical information to better understand and improve an athlete’s performance. 

Structural and Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program

The Adult Congenital Heart Disease program (ACHD) at IU Health provides access to multidisciplinary specialties both inside and outside of cardiology. We are the only ACHD program in the state of Indiana recognized by the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA). 

Vascular Regenerative Medicine Program

The molecular and cellular therapeutics program at Indiana University Health is a ground-breaking program in regenerative approaches to cardiovascular disease. This program is nationally recognized for starting the first stem cell trial for cardiovascular disease in the US and was the national leader for the recently completed multicenter Phase III “Marrow Stem Treatment of Limb Ischemia in Subjects with Severe Peripheral Arterial Disease trial” (MOBILE) that demonstrated a significant reduction in risk for leg amputation in patients with advanced peripheral arterial disease. 

Heart and Vascular Clinical Trials

We have many clinical trial opportunities, including the ARREST trial, to assess the efficacy of immune regulatory stem cells in preventing expansion of known aortic aneurysms and the MOBILE trial for Marrow Stem Treatment of Limb Ischemia in Subjects with Sever Peripheral Arterial Disease (MOBILE). The MOBILE trial is continuing as an open access registry (all patients will be treated) for patients with critical limb ischemia.

Carotid Stent Program 

The Heart and Vascular Care program provides extensive evaluation and treatment of occlusive carotid artery disease including transcervical carotid stenting. IU health is the only site in Indiana participating in the ROADSTER-2 Study, a follow-up to the Safety and Efficacy Study for Reverse Flow Used During Carotid Artery Stenting procedure clinical trial.

Advanced Arrhythmia Ablation

We offer therapy and the most advanced procedures to treat cardiac arrhythmias that range from simple to highly complex in nature. Our labs are equipped with innovative equipment, which—when combined with the skills of our experienced physicians and staff—allows IU Health to perform even the most complex ablations. 

The Thoracic Transplant Program

The Thoracic Transplant program includes multispecialty providers involved in the care of patients with the most advanced heart and lung diseases. Our scope of expertise covers heart and lung transplant, management of heart failure, mechanical circulatory support device (MCSD) and ventricular assist device (VAD) services, pulmonary hypertension, advanced lung diseases, and adult congenital heart disease, adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ExVivo lung perfusion treatment, as well as other complex and rare cardiopulmonary conditions. 

The Aortic Surgery Program (Complex Thoracic and Thoracoabdominal Surgery)

The Aortic Surgery program at Indiana University Health is a full-service practice that comprises all aspects of thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) and dissection care. Our expertise includes all open surgical procedures, including valve-sparing aortic root procedures, Ross procedures, arch replacement, open thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair, and minimally invasive endovascular procedures. IU Health has the only cardiovascular program in the state of Indiana that can provide a complete range of aortic surgical care. 

Level One Emergency Programs

IU Health offers the most comprehensive scope of Level One and Emergency Programs in Indiana including: Level One Heart Attack Program, Level One Stroke Program, Level One Trauma Program, Cardiogenic Shock Emergency Program, Pulmonary Embolism Emergency Program, Esophageal Emergency Program, and Vascular One Emergency Program.
