Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Helping you look as good as you feel

When your physical appearance doesn’t fit what you want or need it to be, it can affect your everyday life.

You may have been born with a facial or other deformity. You may see changes in your body due to age, weight loss, or other causes. You might have suffered severe burns or traumatic injury, and have lost mobility or function. Or you may desire breast reconstruction after a mastectomy due to cancer.

No matter the reason, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at IU Health can help. We provide a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures to both children and adults. Our surgical team has the expertise to repair, restore and improve your physical appearance, so that you look as good as you feel.

Our Approach to Plastic & Reconstructive SurgerySlice

Although our patients’ reasons for seeking plastic surgery can vary widely, our approach remains the same: to give you the best possible care using the most advanced techniques and to support your goals for your appearance. We care about how you look and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself.

Our services

Breast reconstruction

It can be emotionally difficult to lose one or both of your breasts due to cancer. If your breast cancer requires a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery can help you feel better about your appearance while you focus on your recovery from cancer.

We use the most contemporary methods for breast reconstruction. This surgery can be performed either immediately after the mastectomy, or after a period of recovery. Your physician will discuss the best option for you, depending on your health and the type of breast cancer surgery you’ll need.

  • DIEP flap surgery: IU Health is home to one of the only group of doctors in Indiana performing this very specialized surgery using your own fat tissue for breast reconstruction. As a more natural type of reconstruction, DIEP flaps are often the best option if you have scar tissue left over from mastectomy or if you’ve undergone radiation therapy following cancer. We use fat tissue from your own abdomen leaving the muscle intact. DIEP allows surgeons to reconstruct breast tissue that will grow and age with the patient and retain a natural consistency.
  • Implants: Implants are a viable option for women who need or wish to avoid flap surgery. Women who choose implant-based reconstruction may want to avoid scars on their abdomen or may want to avoid a major surgery due to age or other medical problems. Implant reconstruction is also a good option for patients with congenital breast deformities.
  • Contouring: To ensure a natural, balanced appearance, we can reshape your unaffected breast in addition to your reconstruction.

General reconstructive surgery

We offer plastic surgery for all types of traumatic injury and congenital deformities, including:

  • Acute hand trauma
  • Complex head and neck (scalp, mid-face and jaw) reconstruction after trauma or cancer, including facial fracture repair
  • Reconstructive surgery to the abdomen, chest or extremities after cancer, trauma or surgery
  • Specialized surgery to protect vital organs after cardiac and vascular surgery.

Cleft and cranioplasty

Children and adults with congenital facial abnormalities, traumatic head and face injuries and other conditions may need surgical solutions to restore function or improve your appearance.

Our surgeons treat:

  • Cleft palate and/or cleft lip
  • Craniofacial deformities of the skull, forehead and eyes
  • Maxillofacial deformities of the jaws, bite and temporomandibular (TMJ) joints.

Cosmetic plastic surgery

We offer a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures to reshape and restore your face and body after natural aging, weight loss and pregnancies take their toll.  Available procedures include:

  • Arm lift
  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast reduction/lift
  • Tummy tuck
  • Liposuction
  • Rhinoplasty, or surgery to change the shape of the nose
  • Blepharoplasty, or eyelid correction
  • Facelift

The most common procedure we perform is the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, after massive weight loss or for self-improvement. You may choose to combine certain procedures while having surgery for other purposes, such as a tummy tuck with a hysterectomy.
