Dr. Surdam joined the staff at Orthopedics of Southern Indiana in 2004 as a fellowship trained joint replacement surgeon. He is a native of the west, growing up in Wyoming. He obtained his undergraduate education at the Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., graduating with honors in 1994. After completing medical school at Creighton University, he completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery in Boston, Mass. at Boston University, Boston Medical Center. While in Boston, his training included fracture management, total joint reconstruction, sports medicine, and pediatric orthopedics. After spending five years learning general orthopedics, Dr. Surdam elected to further his education with a fellowship in adult reconstruction to master modern joint replacement surgical techniques.

His one year fellowship was completed under the direction of Richard E. White, Jr., MD at the New Mexico Center of Joint Replacement Surgery. During the fellowship, Dr. White was the president of the prestigious Hip Society and emphasis was placed on the management of the arthritic patient. Dr. Surdam learned state-of-the-art techniques for total joint replacement and has brought that expertise to Bloomington. His areas of specialization include less invasive hip and knee replacement, high flex/high demand/gender specific implants, revision surgery, and computer navigation.

He was named the director of Joint Replacement Surgery at IU Health Bloomington Hospital in 2008, and has performed over 2,000 successful joint replacements for patients in this region. He is also a Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor with the Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Surdam enjoys golf, Indiana University athletics, the Red Sox, and Colts. He and his family love life in Bloomington, and take great pride in caring for the community.
