Biography

Dr. Misty Shields was born in Dallas, Texas as the youngest of five children. She developed a passion for medicine and treating patients with lung cancer when her father was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. It is her lifelong passion to treat patients and help discover new therapies to aid in the cure of lung cancer.

Dr. Shields is a translational medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of lung cancer. Dr. Shields has a research laboratory that focuses on understanding chemoresistance and novel treatments for small cell lung cancer. She formed an advocacy group Small Cell SMASHERS in partnership with LUNGevity to help support patients and loved ones impacted by small cell lung cancer.

Dr. Shields earned her PhD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas before pursuing her medical degree from University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and a fellowship in hematology-oncology from the University of South Florida/Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

In her spare time, she enjoys interior design, ballet, baking, cooking and spending time with her husband and two children.
