Aquatic therapy helps patients regain strength and confidence
During National Swimming Pool Day on July 11, many people think of summer fun and relaxation. For patients receiving aquatic therapy, a pool means even more: it helps them move with less pain, build strength and improve their quality of life.
At IU Health Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation in Muncie, aquatic therapy takes place in a 92-degree therapeutic pool designed to support movement and reduce stress on the body. The water's buoyancy helps patients exercise in ways that may be difficult on land, making it an effective option for people living with chronic pain, balance concerns, mobility limitations, obesity, sports injuries and neurological conditions.
"A lot of patients tell us it feels like they're floating on a cloud," says Matthew Herran, PTA. "The water supports them while still allowing them to strengthen muscles and improve movement."
Many patients are surprised by how much of a workout they receive in the pool. Herran says the combination of warmth, support and resistance allows patients to challenge themselves in a more comfortable environment while learning exercises they can continue independently at home.
One patient's experience remains especially memorable. Following a failed back surgery, the patient spent five years in a wheelchair and was unable to walk. Over several months of aquatic therapy, he progressed from limited foot movement to taking steps in the pool, then walking laps with support. By the end of therapy, he was able to walk 45 feet using a walker.
For Herran, stories like these demonstrate the role aquatic therapy can play in recovery and long-term wellness.
"There's a lot of hope for people living with chronic conditions," he says. "Aquatic therapy gives them an opportunity to rebuild strength in a low-pain environment and work toward goals they may not have thought were possible."
