Bedford DAISY focuses on patient comfort

Sometimes, patients need a level of care that requires hospital admission. DAISY Award winner Emmi Alvey, RN, is dedicated to making those stays as positive as possible at IU Health Bedford’s Intensive Care Unit.

“In the hospital, patients can feel very exposed and vulnerable,” she shares. “I do my best to respect my patients' dignity by reassuring them that I am there to help them.”

That includes looking for ways to make patients more comfortable, like talking them through potentially scary or uncomfortable things so they can feel confident and safe.

Her DAISY Award nominator appreciated Emmi's compassion, dignity and professionalism when their loved one was admitted to the hospital.

“Emmi treated them with unwavering dignity, gentleness, and respect…[she] handled every situation with kindness and professionalism that brought comfort not only to my loved one, but to our entire family.”

“It is reassuring to know that I am making a difference in the lives of my patients and their family members,” says Emmi. “I am so grateful and blessed to be able to care for people each day and do what I love.”

She adds that she wouldn’t be where she is today without her team, who’ve mentored her and helped her grow since she was a “baby” nurse on the unit.

“We have a great team in the ICU. I hope all my fellow nurses know how much I respect and value them."
