Bedford DAISY Nurse Leader serves and supports her team
IU Health Bedford Hospital
“It's easy to say, ‘Let me know if you need anything’—I’ve said this many times, and never has someone told me what they needed.”
That’s why IU Health Bedford Emergency department assistant manager Alisha Fagan, RN, puts herself in other’s shoes to see how she can help lighten their load.
The 2026 DAISY Nurse Leader Award winner was nominated by a team member for many reasons, including how she “reads between the lines” to find what others really need.
That nominator had two loved ones admitted to the hospital during the holidays, so Alisha organized and delivered Christmas dinner to them.
“She asked what could be done to help, and I kept telling her I was ok,” said the nominator. “That kind gesture meant so much and took so much stress off me.”
They also shared how Alisha handles chaos with peace, joy and love—and by sometimes jumping into the fray.
“There is a difference between being a manager and a leader,” shared Alisha. “A leader will work alongside their staff when times are tough and show they aren’t alone. It's also important to remember leaders are there to serve our team.”
She advocates for her team to pursue their goals and tries to support their lives outside the hospital. Inside the hospital, Alisha encourages nurses to be the caregiver they would want to work with, including coming to work with a positive attitude, working hard and showing love to others.
“If you are compassionate, you will be a strong team member, will have a purpose, and will strive for excellence.”
