Bloomington DAISY delivers exceptional critical care with compassion
IU Health Bloomington Hospital
DAISY Award winner Heather DeHart, RN, IU Health Bloomington Intensive Care Unit (ICU), was drawn to critical care shortly after going into nursing.

“I enjoy the complex patients and the challenges that come with critical care,” she says.
When she came to IU Health, looking for a change in her nursing practice, she shadowed the ICU. DeHart was impressed by the level of support given to the nurses from the management team, which allows the caregiver to focus their attention on the patient.
She shares, “I believe every patient and family deserve to be cared for and to feel as though every interaction is above and beyond. I try to treat the patients and the families I encounter as though they are my family member.”
That guiding principle is why a patient’s loved one nominated DeHart for the DAISY Award.
They share, “I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the exceptional professionalism, expertise, and compassion that Heather brings to her role every day. What made Heather's care especially meaningful to our family was her ability to connect with [the patient] on a personal level.”
DeHart built a genuine rapport with the patient that the nominator says transformed the hospital experience with patience, warmth and “a wonderful sense of humor.”
The patient’s loved one said that was in addition to DeHart’s extensive clinical knowledge that allowed her to assess complex situations, anticipate patient needs and respond quickly and effectively.
“She is exceptionally personable, taking the time to explain treatments, answer questions, and provide reassurance during some of the most difficult moments in their lives,” says the nominator. “Her caring and attentive nature helps patients and families feel supported, informed and valued.”
“The IU Health value that resonates with me most is compassion,” says DeHart. “As healthcare professionals, we can become desensitized to the things we see day after day—it is so important to remember to show compassion for all of our patients.”
