Bloomington DAISY shares how compassion can change the patient experience

Compassion, critical thinking and teamwork—nursing combines all of these in a way that feels very meaningful to Shaina Durand, RN, with the IU Health Bloomington 5 East Acuity Adaptable team.

“Healthcare allows me to make a real difference every day, whether that's through patient care, emotional support, education, or simply being a reassuring presence,” says the DAISY Award winner. “Clinical care is important, but showing kindness, patience and understanding can truly change someone’s experience. Taking the time to listen and help patients feel safe and informed can make a huge impact on the patient’s experience and recovery.”

One of her patients really appreciated this approach during their stay, which started with a reassuring smile at shift change: “She introduced herself to me while informing me that she was going to take good care of me. She was professional at all times, yet she made me feel that if I shared something very personable that she would keep listening without judgment. Her entire core was more than good quality nursing care.”

Some of the actions included in the nomination include Shaina sitting down while speaking so she wasn’t towering over the patient, explaining each medication as they were scanned and always asking them if they needed anything before leaving the room.

Shaina explains, “I think those small moments make a big difference for patients. Being in the hospital can feel overwhelming, stressful and sometimes scary. Patients deserve to feel informed, heard and reassured, and I want them to know they’re not alone during their care experience.”

She also tries to support the loved ones through open communication and easing concerns whenever possible. Overall, she shares that healthcare works best when you have a team that supports one another.

“I’m grateful to work alongside such a supportive and dedicated team.”

She, in turn, believes in supporting her team by being dependable, collaborative, and always willing to help where needed.
