Bloomington DAISY winner knows compassion makes a difference
IU Health Bloomington Hospital

When families face some of life's most difficult moments, compassion can make all the difference. For Molly Sipes, RN, Bloomington Intensive Care Unit, providing comfort, dignity and human connection is just as important as delivering excellent clinical care.
One of the most important lessons she has learned over her career is to see beyond a diagnosis.
“It is important to keep in mind that you are not just treating a diagnosis or a symptom, you are caring for a person, and that person deserves respect and compassion no matter what the circumstance is that led them to crossing your path,” says Molly.
That commitment to compassionate care inspired a patient’s loved one to nominate her the DAISY Award. They shared how Molly went above and beyond to keep their loved one comfortable before they passed away, playing music the patient enjoyed, speaking to them with dignity and ensuring the family had meaningful time together.
“She laughed with us as stories were shared. She teared up with us too. I’ve never had someone show so much compassion for someone who she had never met,” says the nomination.
“A big part of what makes my job meaningful is being able to treat people with dignity,” says Molly.
When patients cannot share their own stories, she takes time to learn about their personalities, interests and sense of humor from loved ones. She says those conversations help families feel included and provide valuable insight into the person behind the patient.
“The little things go a long way for both patients and families in stressful times,” says Molly.
She’s also quick to credit her colleagues for making that level of care possible.
“My team is amazing,” she says. “We work together so well, and care about each other not just on the clock, but outside of work, too.”
While all the IU Health values are important to her, Molly says team resonates the most for her. In critical care, she explains, trust and collaboration are essential to providing seamless, continuous care.
“I am lucky to have a team of people I could trust,” says Molly.
