Bloomington nurses care with board certified skills

Nurses are a critical part of any healthcare team. From comforting, educating, treating, teaching, leading and more—nurses are always finding ways to help others.

One of the ways they enhance their skills is through board certification.

“While being certified means that you are competent in your nursing specialty, I feel as though it means so much more,” says Katlyn Davis, RNC-OB, with the Bloomington Labor and Delivery unit, shown below and to the left. “It means that you are going above and beyond to stay up to date on your specialty. You are learning as much as you can so that you can provide the best care that you can for your patients.”

Katlyn Davis, RNC-OB, and Beth Spears, RNC-OB, are part of the IU Health Bloomington Labor and Delivery team.

“I was inspired to obtain my certification to help understand certain disease processes and to help educate my patients,” says Beth Spears, RNC-OB, Bloomington Labor and Delivery charge nurse seen above and to the right. “It is important to me that my patients get the best care that I can give them and being certified helps me give exceptional care.”

Davis and Spears are both board certified in inpatient obstetrics, meaning they have specialized knowledge to enhance patient care.

“I genuinely believe that becoming certified has allowed me to become a stronger nurse,” says Davis. “Not only has it helped me grow in my career, but it has allowed me to provide stronger overall care to my patients. I would recommend becoming certified to any nurse that is wanting to continue growing in their field.”

Even though both team members were already nurses in the inpatient obstetrics unit, they chose to expand upon their knowledge and take the extra step to prove their expertise via the board certification process.

IU Health’s Nursing Professional Development team (NPDs) are great resources for team members who want to learn about board certification, who are preparing for their exam and those who need help signing up for an exam. They can also help connect team members to additional sources of support, which include IU Health’s Nursing Certification Programs.
