Early mobility key to ICU patient success

Taylor Gilbert is a physical therapist (PT) on the intensive care unit (ICU) at IU Health University Hospital. "Every patient who is admitted to the ICU, they get an automatic referral for PT. We triage them go through their chart and see what we can do with them," said Taylor, who advocates for the early mobility of patients whenever possible. "Early mobility is great, even when patients are on a ventilator. Getting them up and moving helps with their pulmonary system, it gets them off the ventilator faster. Even just moving a little bit increases their functional outcomes."
