Josey Freeman, a junior at Indiana University – Indianapolis, enjoys the hustle and bustle of life as a college student. She balances a busy academic and social calendar, while working in Remicade infusions every six weeks as she manages Crohn’s disease. When Freeman moved on to the next stage of her life at college, she was at a crossroads of deciding whether to continue receiving infusions at a facility or transition her care to IU Health Home Infusion. As a busy college student and “homebody at heart,” the choice was easy for Freeman and her family.
“When I was going to an infusion center, I would bring a pillow and a blanket to feel comfortable,” says Freeman. “Now, [receiving my infusions at home,] I do not even have to leave my house. I get to snuggle up with all my blankets and even have my pets with me for support.”
Since 1988, IU Health Home Infusion has been specializing in delivering a wide range of infusion therapies with a personalized treatment plan right to patient homes. Patients who do not need facility-based labs and testing can experience a more comfortable, convenient and cost-effective infusion option from the comfort of their home.
“The [at-home] infusion process is not much different from being in an infusion center,” says Freeman. “As a patient, all you need to do is keep the medication and supplies [they mail you] safe and ready for the infusion date, and the nurse will do the rest. Just sit back and relax; no worries.”
Freeman does sit back and relax during her home infusions thanks to her nurse, Heather Riggins, who has instilled confidence in Freeman that she’s well-taken care of, and that she’s a trusted confidant and friend.
“Josey’s one of the strongest people I know,” says Riggins. “She’s clever, determined and focused on accomplishing her goals and facing her fears. She prioritizes well-being in ways that would have benefited me so much at her age. Josey is an extension of the love and wisdom I share with all my patients and I’m forever grateful.”
IU Health Home Infusion serves a wide range of patients and specialties, but each patient can expect access to a highly-skilled, compassionate and dedicated care team, like Freeman experiences with Riggins.
“Heather is like family to me. She supports my goals in life and wants the best for me,” Freeman says. “Home healthcare has been a blessing because I get superior healthcare with a nurse who cares for me, like family. Getting home infusions through IU Health has changed my life for the better.”
