As IU Health Saxony doubles in size through the Fishers Community Impact Project—a $300 million investment to meet the needs of what has become one of the fastest growing areas in the state—the physical spaces of the hospital aren’t the only thing that’s growing.
Several of IU Health Saxony’s services are also growing, including its Urology program. Within the last 12 months, the department has gone from one urologist to three.
One of those newcomers is Dr. Caleb Cooper, MD, who joined the team last month.
The perfect opportunity
As a general urologist, Dr. Cooper specializes in a little bit of everything, including kidney stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or an enlarged prostate), overactive bladder, prostate cancer, and more.
“It's nice to take care of those patients. You can make a huge impact on quality of life,” Dr. Cooper says. “It's a pretty immediate fix, which I enjoy helping with.”
Dr. Cooper attended Indiana University Bloomington as an undergrad, followed by the Indiana University School of Medicine. After graduating IU School of Medicine, he continued his medical training as a Urology resident at the University of Chicago.
The Fishers Community Impact Project also drew Dr. Cooper in. While he had spent some time at the hospital as a medical student, the expansion was new to him.
“It was a perfect fit,” he says.
Meeting the community’s needs
As the Urology team at IU Health Saxony grows, so does the services its providers are able to offer.
Dr. Cooper joins Dr. Mark Bevill, MD, who focuses on similar specialties, including kidney stones prostate cancer and BPH. Dr. Heather Huelster has also joined the team, specializing in urologic cancer surgery. In 2025, Dr. Ramzy Burns, MD, will bring in female urological care to IU Health Saxony.
While he’s only been seeing his patients for a month, it’s clear to Dr. Cooper that patients coming to IU Health Saxony want to stay at IU Health Saxony for their care. And with the variety of care the four physicians will be able to offer, that will be a reality for many patients.
“They want to stay close to home. It's nice to be able to make that reality, because I think that's a newer ability,” he says. “It’s almost a full spectrum of Urology.”
Along with new providers, the Urology program—and other areas of the hospital—have already started to offer new procedures and services to Urology patients.
Both Dr. Cooper and Dr. Bevill are now performing Aquablation therapy for patients with BPH. One of the newest BPH procedures, Aquablation uses a high-pressure water jet to remove obstructing prostate tissue.
“Aquablation is one of the procedures available now to treat prostates of most sizes and shapes. It's a bit more preserving of sexual function for men,” he explains.
Dr. Cooper is also excited that IU Health Saxony is now able to offer robust interventional radiology services, which are crucial for taking care of some urology patients. The Urology team will also be able to utilize the hospital’s new advanced robotic surgery equipment.
A bright future at IU Health Saxony—soon to be IU Health Fishers
As the Fishers Community Impact Project nears its completion in late 2025, Dr. Cooper is excited about not only expanding his own department, but to see what all IU Health Saxony will offer.
Before, bigger surgical cases might’ve been routed to other IU Health locations. But in the near future, IU Health Saxony—soon to be IU Health Fishers—may be a flagship for new procedures and technology.
“Dr. Bevill and I will be confident doing most procedures here and bringing new technologies and treatments to Saxony,” Dr. Cooper says. “I’m excited for a bigger hospital, more hospital beds and a bigger Emergency department. The expansion of everything will hopefully make our patients’ lives easier in terms of access, getting scheduled and getting taken care of in a timely basis.”
