Managing allergies and bug bites this spring

Managing allergies and bug bites this spring

Spring is a beautiful time to enjoy nature, but for many, it brings the added challenge of allergies and insect bites. Read more to find out how to manage these seasonal issues.

Allergies in the spring are often caused by increased pollen levels from trees, grasses and flowers. These allergens can trigger sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion and in more severe cases, breathing issues or asthma flare-ups.

“Springtime is a high time of year for flare-ups of lung conditions such as asthma and COPD,” says Holly Harding, MD, a physician at IU Health Urgent Care. “Controlling seasonal allergies can help to prevent flares.”

For home care, Harding recommends over-the-counter medications like steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, and saline rinses, along with preventative steps like staying indoors during high pollen times and keeping windows closed.

Insect bites from mosquitoes and ticks are another common concern. They can cause anything from mild irritation to serious allergic reactions. Most bites improve with basic care like washing the area, using cold compresses and applying anti-itch treatments.

“Some people have severe allergic reactions to insect stings. This is called anaphylaxis, and it’s an emergency,” Harding emphasizes. In such cases, or if symptoms escalate, care teams are equipped to provide breathing treatments, injectable medications and referrals to an emergency department if needed.

From bug bites to allergy management, IU Health’s Urgent Care and On-Demand Virtual Care teams help patients enjoy the season with peace of mind.
