Physical therapists help Butler dancers stay healthy
During National Dance Week, April 17–26, System Health Solutions (SHS) is spotlighting a behind‑the‑scenes partnership that helps Butler University dancers perform at their best onstage and in the studio.
For the past five years, a team of physical therapists has supported Butler’s dance program by providing consistent, on‑site care throughout the academic year and during performances. The team includes Maren Dixon, Victoria Hyatt, Alyssa Emata, Katie Miller and Andrea Busseli, whose shared dance backgrounds help them connect with and treat dancers effectively.
Victoria Hyatt serves as the team lead and liaison between Butler and IU Health, helping coordinate care and communication. The therapists work closely together, remaining in regular contact to ensure continuity of care for the dancers and meeting routinely to discuss treatment approaches, share expertise and support one another’s professional growth.
“We work very collaboratively,” says Dixon. “We’re constantly communicating about dancer needs, best treatment options and how we can support them together. Having that consistency and teamwork is so important for this population.”
The physical therapists are present at Butler five days a week during the school year, operating a training room where dancers can sign up for 30‑minute appointments. Care ranges from addressing acute injuries to managing ongoing concerns that require continued follow‑up.
The team uses a combination of manual therapy techniques, exercises to address muscular imbalances and taping for joint support or pain relief. Some dancers may only need a single visit, while others benefit from regular care over time.
During performances, including Butler Ballet’s recent production of Giselle, physical therapists remain backstage to assist dancers with pain management, injury prevention and quick evaluations if new issues arise. The team also works closely with sports medicine physician Stacie Hirota, DO, who supports dancers during performances and facilitates timely clinic visits when additional medical care is needed.
For the therapists, the most rewarding moments come from seeing dancers recover and return confidently to the stage.
“Watching them grow, heal and succeed is incredibly meaningful,” Dixon says. “They’re a motivated, respectful group of students, and it’s a privilege to be part of their journey.”
This partnership between the Physical Therapy team and Butler University dancers reflects IU Health’s commitment to compassionate, highly skilled and personalized care, before and after the curtain rises.
