Physical therapists’ keen observations lead to atrial fibrillation diagnosis

Physical therapists’ keen observations lead to atrial fibrillation diagnosis

“Listen to your therapists,” says Kevin Cook, a patient of IU Health Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Eagle Highlands. Cook, a cancer survivor, first met Jake Nobbe, PT, DPT, during a physical therapy session following colon surgery, while still undergoing chemotherapy. Nobbe encouraged Cook to regain his strength through the challenging recovery by playing the Rocky theme song during appointments to keep him motivated.

A year later, after a knee replacement in 2024, Cook returned to Eagle Highlands, this time specifically requesting Nobbe. Nobbe and fellow therapist Aly Craig, PT, DPT, began noticing Cook wasn't his usual self and was complaining of intense fatigue. A thorough assessment by the therapists revealed an irregular pulse. Cook’s primary care physician was immediately contacted, leading to a prompt diagnosis of atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat.

Thanks to the swift actions of Nobbe and Craig, Cook received the urgent attention he needed. He expressed his gratitude, noting how their vigilance and proactive approach made a significant difference in his health. "Jake is fantastic, and Aly, obviously, is too,” shares Cook. “I'm thankful that they recognized it and set up an appointment with my family doctor.”

Cook's experience underscores IU Health’s commitment to the values of excellence and team, and the profound impact our dedicated physical therapists have on each patient's unique journey.
