Each year, South Region physicians, advanced practice providers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and others volunteer their time to serve the local community. One such effort is the annual spring sports physical event.
For the most recent event, held Monday, May 12 at Bloomington High School South (BHSS), Kevin Miller, MD, Sports Medicine physician (shown to the right), and Jenni Druckrey, Plastic Surgery and Joint Replacement Surgery office manager, collaborated to recruit IU Health volunteers and coordinate with the IU School of Optometry, local schools and community members.
Thanks to their efforts, 317 student-athletes in grades 9 – 12 from Bloomington High School South and Bloomington High School North received physical exams for clearance to participate in athletic activities.
“It was a very smooth night overall and one of the best I have been a part of during the last 15 years,” says Andy Hodson, Athletic Director at BHSN.
Despite the schools’ long-standing rivalry, both recognized the success of the event and its positive impact on the community.
“Great job by all. BHSS is grateful to IU Health and its physicians for putting on this event,” says J.R. Holmes, Athletic Director and Boys Basketball Coach at BHSS. “It’s nice to know the community supports our athletes and schools.”
The Indiana High School Athletic Association requires student-athletes to complete a physical exam to participate in school sports. However, barriers like scheduling and cost can limit access. Events like these not only increase accessibility but can also detect underlying health concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed. With IU Health providers on-site, students were also able to schedule follow-up care as needed.
“It was inspiring to see everyone working together with such enthusiasm and purpose,” says Druckrey. “I’m proud of what we accomplished and grateful to be part of a team that consistently steps up to support our community.”
