Redefining care and confidence: A nurse’s influence in aesthetics

Before Abigail Gonzalez, RN, was team lead for the IU Health Plastic Surgery team in Bloomington, she worked in a variety of clinical settings. Now, she’s found a special passion for plastic surgery, which allows her to combine clinical expertise with the ability to help patients feel confident and empowered.

“Many people associate plastic surgery and aesthetics solely with appearance, but these services often have a significant impact on a person’s confidence, self-image and quality of life,” Abigail shares.

In 2025, she presented to the Scope of Care Task Committee about an opportunity to expand access and patient care. They agreed that after a patient receives a good faith examination conducted by an IU Health Plastic Surgery or Dermatology physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, a nurse within that practice may continue administering Botox for up to one year following the initial evaluation.

To position her team for growth and prepare them for increased patient offerings, Abigail spearheaded specialized training in Botox administration, which included educational materials and hands-on clinical experience led by neurotoxin representatives. She also worked with organizational leaders to help establish a framework that supports patient safety, consistency and high-quality outcomes.

Offering Botox and other cosmetic treatments provides patients with access to evidence-based aesthetic procedures in a medical setting where safety, education and individualized care are priorities.

“One of the things I am most proud of is helping expand the role of nursing within our practice. Being involved in developing procedures and creating opportunities for nurses to practice at the top of their license has been incredibly rewarding,” Abigail says. “Plastic Surgery is a unique specialty because it combines science, artistry and compassionate care and I feel fortunate to be part of a team that is committed to delivering exceptional care to our patients and community.”
