Indiana University Health currently offers a PGY1 residency program that is closely associated with the Butler University and Purdue University Colleges of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In addition, IU Health offers specialty training in the areas of critical care, infectious disease, drug information/medication safety, oncology, pediatrics, internal medicine, informatics, and pharmacotherapy.

Pharmacy residents receive a unique opportunity to train at distinct practice sites within IU Health's academic medical center—IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU Health University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

PGY1 Residencies

The focus of this ASHP-accredited PGY1 Residency is the development of advanced knowledge of pharmacotherapeutics and application of drug therapy in the provision of quality patient care in collaboration with other medical professionals. The resident will focus on clinical pharmacy practice, education of clinicians and patients and professional accountability. The resident will demonstrate a desire to learn, a sincere interest in the profession of pharmacy, and a dedication to achieving all outcomes of the residency program.

Upon completing a residency at IU Health, the resident shall be competent in the following:

  • Provide pharmaceutical care in various health care settings
  • Educate patients as well as current and future health care professionals
  • Collaborate with members of the health care system
  • Demonstrate self-assessment and self-improvement behaviors
  • Demonstrate professional initiative and responsibility
  • Demonstrate the practice skills of a qualified pharmacist
  • Develop and complete clinical research activities through the completion of a major residency project
  • Share a commitment to the profession through participation in professional organizations and committees

Rotations

PGY1 Residents must complete one month in orientation, administration, drug information, infectious diseases, medicine, surgery, critical care, and pediatrics. Ambulatory care is integrated throughout the program, but one-month rotations may be taken.

24 Month Pharmacotherapy Residency

Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Indiana University Health offer a two-year Pharmacotherapy Residency designed to provide a strong foundation in clinical arenas and academia. The resident will participate in medical rounds with advanced clinical training in both an inpatient and outpatient venue. Additionally, this two-year experience will include a longitudinal experience in didactic and clinical teaching with students at the Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Applicants interested in completing this two-year residency should closely evaluate the IU Health PGY1 requirements, as the first year of this experience will closely mimic the PGY1 offered by IU Health. Additionally, Pharmacotherapy residents are expected to participate in longitudinal experiences in leadership, ambulatory care, and academia. The second year of this residency program will be organized to meet the goals of the resident. Expectations will be expanded to provide a more in depth familiarity in leadership, academia, clinical practice, and research.

PGY2 Residencies

The academic medical center of IU Health has an inpatient base of more than 1,300 patients. This provides residents with the opportunity for practice in diverse adult and pediatric environments, in both academic and private hospital settings. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to participate in the development of PGY1 Residents and Doctor of Pharmacy students from both Purdue University and Butler University.

Critical Care

IU Health's ASHP accredited PGY2 Critical Care Residency program takes advantage of a large and diverse critical care population throughout the three downtown IU Health hospitals, with a focus on adult critical care. The resident will gain knowledge in pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, drug utilization and pathophysiology of critical care. Potential rotations include adult medical/surgical, trauma, neurosurgical, pulmonary, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiac intensive care as well as emergency medicine. Pediatric critical care rotations include medical/surgical, trauma and neonatal intensive care. In addition, any of the other diverse clinical rotations may be elected, including bone marrow transplant, infectious diseases, nutrition support, nephrology, solid organ transplant, surgery and toxicology. The pharmacists completing this residency program will be competent and confident to practice in almost any critical care environment.

Upon the completion of this residency the critical care resident will have achieved the following objectives:

  • Have the knowledge base and pharmaceutical care skills to provide pharmaceutical care in various critical care settings.
  • Function as an effective member of the critical care team and be integrated in the health-care system.
  • Acquire the practice skills of a qualified critical care pharmacist.
  • Provide effective educational activities in practice and didactic settings. Educate patients/families, and current and future healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and complete clinical research activities. Each resident is required to complete a major project.
  • Share a commitment to the profession through participation in professional organizations.
  • Demonstrate self-assessment and self-improvement behaviors.

Requirements

The qualified applicant will possess a doctor of pharmacy or master of science degree. Previous PGY1 Residency training is required.

Drug Information

Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and IU Health offer a one-year ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in Drug Information/Drug Use Policy. This residency program provides advanced training in an institutional-based drug information center on various topics, including the provision of drug information, formulary and drug use policy management, adverse drug reaction and medication variance evaluation and reporting, literature analysis and integration of service throughout a multi-hospital system. Objectives of this residency parallel those developed by ASHP for PGY2 Residency Training in Drug Information Practice.

Areas of experience will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Active involvement in the management of drug use policy efforts at IU Health Partners, including participation in Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee activities, formulary management and implementation of drug policy guidelines and protocols.
  • Intensive focus on quality improvement efforts involving adverse drug reaction and medication variance evaluation and reporting including participation in Medication Safety Committees at IU Health.
  • Provision of drug information to health care professionals affiliated with IU Health and surrounding health care settings.
  • Preparation and publication of pharmacy newsletters.
  • Teaching and precepting Purdue University and Butler University PharmD students in both didactic and experiential settings.
  • Administrative responsibilities associated with an institutional-based Drug Information Service and Purdue University Department of Pharmacy Practice.
  • Drug Information Web site development and maintenance.

HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY

IU Health is offering a one-year ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in Hematology/Oncology at Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute designated clinical cancer center. This residency program provides advanced training in the provision of comprehensive clinical services to patients with cancer. Areas of focus include hematologic malignancies, solid tumor oncology, bone marrow transplant, gynecologic oncology and pediatric oncology. Experience in clinical trials oversight, teaching of pharmacy students and residents, participation in physician faculty conferences, policy development and participation in multidisciplinary committees is provided. Objectives of this residency parallel those developed by ASHP for PGY2 Residency Training in Oncology Pharmacy Practice.

Areas of experience will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prospective evaluation of chemotherapy orders and serving as an authoritative resource for the appropriateness of treatment regimen, dosing and supportive care measures.
  • Participation in daily medical staff rounds.
  • Moderation of patient group teaching conferences and individual patient counseling opportunities.
  • Protocol review opportunities through the Indiana University Cancer Center Scientific Review Committee and Institution IRB.
  • Provision of drug information to health care professionals affiliated with Indiana University Cancer Center and surrounding health care settings.
  • Preparation and publication of manuscripts suitable for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Teaching and precepting Purdue University and Butler University PharmD students and IU Health PGY1 residents in both didactic and experiential settings.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE

IU Health is offering a one-year ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in Infectious Diseases. This residency program is designed to provide experiences and competencies in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy using a non-restrictive formulary model. The resident will gain knowledge in pharmacokinetic monitoring, antimicrobial drug utilization, formulary consideration and management, infection control practices and anti-infective resistance management. The resident will have the opportunity to participate in the training of PharmD students and PGY1 residents. Clinical research opportunities exist. Objectives of this residency parallel those developed by ASHP for PGY2 Residency Training in Infectious Disease Pharmacy Practice.

Areas of experience will include, but are not limited to:

  • Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of antimicrobials
  • Diagnostic tests aimed at infectious diseases
  • Antibiotic formulary considerations and management
  • Microbiological processes and testing
  • Hospital epidemiology and infection control
  • Antimicrobial resistance and practices to control measures
  • Daily interactions with Infectious Diseases physicians
  • Daily antibiotic management program at Methodist that includes identifying drug/microbe mismatches, antibiotic selection, IV to oral antibiotic conversion, etc.
  • Anti-infective education of medical and surgical residents and staff, pharmacy residents, students and staff

PHARMACY INFORMATICS

IU Health Information Services Department is offering a one-year PGY2 residency in Informatics. The resident will gain knowledge and experience in the management of pharmacy information systems and associated projects, including clinical decision support, computerized prescriber order entry, eMAR, automation, integration/interfaces, and barcode technology.

  • The year is a longitudinal residency with the option of specific focus months. Opportunities for teaching and training of students and pharmacy practice residents are available.
  • Participation in a pharmacy informatics college course is optional. Completion of a major residency project is expected.
  • IU Health is a multi-hospital system which includes both academic and private facilities. The IU Health Information Services department supports all of the IU Health facilities.
  • Objectives of this residency are in accordance with those developed by ASHP for an Informatics Specialty Residency.
  • Unique features to this PGY2 program include working on large multi-disciplinary teams for project completion, follow through and support including physicians and nurses. Physician and nursing preceptors can be arranged for rotational experiences and project coordination.

Requirements

The qualified applicant must possess either a Bachelor of Sciences in Pharmacy degree or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and must be eligible for Indiana licensure. Completion of a prior PGY1 Residency or 3 – 5 years of equivalent experience is required.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and IU Health offer a one-year PGY2 Residency in Internal Medicine. The residency is designed to provide both clinical education and advanced training in the fundamentals of Internal Medicine. The resident will gain the clinical skills and knowledge in pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics and the pathophysiology of the core Internal Medicine disease states. Rotations include six months of Internal Medicine with elective opportunities in Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Critical Care, Hematology/Oncology, Nutrition and Metabolic Support, Nephrology, Family Medicine and Ambulatory Care. The resident will have opportunities for both didactic and clinical teaching of Doctor of Pharmacy students from Butler University.

Throughout the course of residency training, the resident's experiences shall include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Provision of pharmaceutical care to hospitalized patients via participation in daily inpatient rounds on the Internal Medicine service and elective rotation services.
  • Participation in physician, pharmacist, nursing and patient education.
  • Development and completion of a clinical research project.
  • Co-authorship of a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Provision of mentorship and service as co-preceptor to Doctor of Pharmacy students from Butler University in the setting of Internal Medicine.
  • Participation in classroom instruction (both didactic and case-based interactive discussion) of Doctor of Pharmacy students at Butler University.
  • Involvement as a co-investigator in a large clinical trial.

PEDIATRICS

IU Health is offering a one-year ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in pediatrics. The resident will gain knowledge in pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, drug utilization and pathophysiology while improving their problem-solving skills and expertise in caring for infants and children. Required rotations include pediatric intensive care (two months) and neonatal intensive care (two months). Additional specialized pediatric experience can be gained through rotations in the burn unit, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, gastroenterology, general surgery, general pediatrics, hematology/oncology, infant development, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, nutritional support, pulmonology and stem cell transplant. Opportunities for teaching and participation in the training of PGY1 residents and Doctor of Pharmacy students are available. Completion of a major residency project is expected.

Riley Hospital is a freestanding pediatric teaching hospital and is the primary pediatric referral hospital for the State of Indiana.

Requirements
