Graduate Medical Education - Arnett
IU Health Arnett Hospital and IU Health Arnett Physicians began providing medical student education in 2009. In 2012 we began taking third year IU School of Medicine Medical Students, 2013 fourth year students were added. The program has grown each year to include students in all four years of medical school.
As part of a program with Indiana University School of Medicine, students at IU Health Arnett Hospital are given the opportunity to be involved in medical research and work in over 20 departments with over 200 physicians.

Phase 1 Year 1 - First Year Medical Students
Students will make 6 clinical visits during the academic year, September through February. This equates to approximately one (1) visit every four weeks. Each visit is approximately 3 hours in length. The visits during the first year will be related to developing their history and physical exam skills, practicing communication skills, identifying the healthcare team members, and identifying healthcare disparities in practice.
Phase 1 Year 2 – Second Year Medical Students
Students will make 4 clinical visits during the fall semester of their second year. This equates to approximately one (1) visit every four weeks. The visits during the second year will be related to conducting a focused history and physical exam.
Our Medical Student Education Program allows first- and second-year students to be assigned to a Longitudinal Preceptor.
First and Second Year Students – Foundations of Clinical Practice (FCP)
Phase 1 Year 1 - First Year Medical Students

We offer a wide range of clinical rotations required of third year medical students a rotations, including anesthesiology, cardiovascular surgery, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine (inpatient/outpatient), neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics (outpatient), radiology and sub-specialties in cardiovascular surgery, orthopedic surgery.
We also offer a fourth-year clerkship in emergency medicine, medicine sub-I, radiology as well as elective rotations in general surgery, intensive care unit (pulmonology), interventional radiology, non-surgical obesity medicine, pediatrics and primary care sports medicine.
During four-week clinical rotations, students perform health history exams, give diagnoses and receive one-on-one feedback from physicians. Rotations provide students with real-world hospital and clinic experiences, helping them prepare for future roles as medical professionals. Clerkships also give them the opportunity to practice or observe procedures, join experienced physicians on patient rounds and conduct interviews with patients.
