Shadowing & Internship Questions
What is the difference between shadowing and an clinical placement/internship?
Shadowing is a strictly “observation only” experience that lasts for a period of 24 hours or less in a single department.
A clinical placement/internship is the experience given to an individual seeking to complete educational program requirements who desires a “limited hands-on” or “project related” experience in one department for a period of more than 24 hours. Only students who are fulfilling educational program requirements will be considered for clinical placement/internship.
What departments can I choose from to shadow or complete my clinical placement/internship?
Many different areas of the hospital are available to students who would like to shadow or complete a clinical placement/internship. For a specific list of areas, please contact the designated contact for your current educational need.
How long does it take to process my student placement application?
The length of time will vary depending on the number of applications pending and department activity. We will try to accommodate as many requests as possible while maintaining patient care as our number one priority and providing quality experiences for students.
What is tuberculosis and the two-step TST?
TB, or tuberculosis, is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. The bacteria can attack any part of your body, but they usually attack the lungs. TB is spread through the air from one person to another.
The two-step Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) is an antigen used to aid in the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection. A healthcare worker can give you the TST (formerly PPD Series). The healthcare worker will inject a small amount of testing fluid (called tuberculin) just under the skin on the lower part of your arm. You may have a small bump where the tuberculin was injected.
After 2 or 3 days, the healthcare worker will measure this bump and tell you if your reaction to the test is positive or negative. A positive reaction usually means that you have a latent TB infection not TB disease. If you have a positive reaction to the skin test, your doctor or nurse may do other tests (Example: a chest x-ray) to see if you have TB disease. Because the TB bacteria may be found somewhere besides your lungs, your doctor or nurse may check your blood or urine, or do other tests. If you have TB disease, you will need to take medicine to cure the disease.
IU Health Employee Health Services department requires a two-step series (the process mentioned above must be completed twice) with the second step completed within 30 days of starting your hours at the hospital. If you have completed both steps within the last 90 days prior to your job shadow experience you will not be required to complete this again.
What if I have already had a TST within the past 12 months?
Documentation of the TST must be provided (it must include the date and exact time it was placed and the date and exact time it was read), and this will be counted as the first step. A second step TB will still be required with 30 days of clinical/observation hours start date.
As a shadower or clinical placement/internship, do I have to complete the tuberculosis testing and turn in immunization records?
Yes, all shadowers and clinical placement/internships are required to meet all the immunization requirements that are listed in the clinical student validation form/observer application.
