Lafayette students pass the torch

A meaningful event unfolded at the Greater Lafayette Career Academy (GLCA) as students affiliated with IU Health from the past two years gathered for a ceremonial ‘passing the torch’ ceremony. This partnership between the GLCA and IU Health aims to cultivate the next generation of healthcare professionals, providing them with hands-on experience and invaluable insights into the medical field.

“There is skilled young talent in every Indiana community,” says Matt DeGolyer, West Central Region talent acquisition team lead. “IU Health is committed to empowering youth to find a meaningful career in healthcare.”

Building a future in medical imaging

2023 GLCA student Leila Lowery, an imaging assistant at IU Health Arnett aiming to become an x-ray tech or ultrasound tech, enjoys exposing herself to different radiology modalities and learning before starting school in the fall. She believes working at IU Health is a great way to for students to get a foot in the door, expose themselves to new things and build connections with people. Lowery advises future GLCA students to make the most of the great programs and not be afraid to ask questions—it is a great way to learn.

A heart for healthcare

2024 GLCA student Nyra Walter, a medical assistant II on the Arnett Family Medicine team with a goal of becoming a Women’s Health registered nurse, praises IU Health as a great community striving to give the best healthcare possible and sees it as an excellent place to grow. Walter advises students to pursue healthcare only if they have a heart for it, to stay focused and believe in their ability to achieve their goals.

Patient care and progress

2024 GLCA student Rafa Awadelseed, a medical assistant II in Internal Medicine aspiring to become a physician, finds fulfillment in helping patients and making a positive impact on their well-being. She recommends pursuing a career with IU Health due to the continuous learning opportunities and supportive environment for professional and personal growth. Awadelseed encourages future students to never give up, view challenges as opportunities to learn and strive to make a difference in the lives of their patients.

“Never give up,” says Awadelseed. “Working in healthcare can be challenging, but it is truly rewarding. The training you will receive from the GLCA and IU Health will thoroughly prepare you for your journey as a medical assistant.”
