Our Approach to Cancer Care
Patients turn to IU Health for cancer treatment every day. Our oncologists in Bloomington have special expertise in treating cancer and blood diseases. We provide our patients with leading-edge cancer care with the convenience of being close to home.
We bring in specialists from many fields to address your diagnosis or care needs. Your team may include:

We offer a wide range of innovative care to meet your needs. We keep up with the latest standards and use the most up-to-date guidelines and research. Our services include chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Depending on your case, we may remove a cancerous mass or tumor as an inpatient or outpatient procedure.
There may also be the opportunity for you to participate in clinical trials. Clinical trials often give you access to new treatment options that might not otherwise be available.
Precision Genomics
Through the Precision Genomics program at IU Health Bloomington, we offer a personalized patient experience unlike any other in the world. If you’ve been diagnosed with advanced forms of cancer, we customize the course of treatment using DNA. That means we can precisely target your cancer with FDA-approved drugs or clinical trials. Through genetic testing, our program experts identify the right treatment for you.
Infusion Services
Our infusion center is located on site. Oncology-trained nurses administer medications, chemotherapy, fluids and specialized treatments through your vein. Our infusion center team provides for you while meeting all the needs and safety requirements of those with cancer.
Cancer Support Services
At IU Health Bloomington, we provide supportive services to help you with the stress of a cancer diagnosis. Through our partnership with Cancer Support Community of Southern Indiana they help to provide free programs for our patients including:
- Support groups
- Wigs and wig fitting
- Reiki therapy
- Yoga
- Art therapy
- Wellness classes
- Individual counseling
Olcott Navigation Team
Oncology certified, registered nurses provide one-on-one support at the IU Health Olcott Center. They will educate you and your family with care from the time of diagnosis all the way through to survivorship.
The services are free thanks to generous support from our community. A nurse navigator will be available to meet with you either in person or by phone. The nurse navigator can answer questions, coordinate care and offer individualized financial assistance for transportation and/or food during treatment.
Side Effect Management
Our team provides supports and resources for side effects of cancer. This includes fatigue, pain, anemia, nausea, skin and hair concerns and more.
During a typical appointment, our care team will do the following:
- Discuss any concerns you may have
- Review your medical and family history
- Check your vitals
- Provide the necessary medical support
- Help you navigate any specialty care
Insurance
IU Health accepts most insurance plans. We recommend that you verify your benefits and eligibility with your insurance company before your visit.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Prior to your appointment, please bring the following:
- Insurance and identification card(s)
- Bring a copy of relevant medical records
- A list of current medications, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete any outstanding paperwork.
Parking
Patients may be dropped off or picked up at the main entrance, which faces Discovery Parkway and offers a covered area, or as directed on the pre-visit information from your doctor’s office.
IU Health Bloomington also has a free parking lot located near our main entrances.
Valet parking is also offered Monday – Friday, 8 am – 6 pm. Vehicles will not be accepted after 4:30 pm to allow time for keys to be returned and vehicles retrieved at the end of the night.
