Biography

Dr. Shaffer is a Fort Wayne, IN native, sports neurologist and interventional pain specialist. He currently serves as the Neurotrauma Consultant to IU Athletics and Medical Director of the IU Health Bloomington Spine Program, providing a unique skillset to the South Central Indiana Region.

Dr. Shaffer earned his undergraduate degree with distinction from IU Bloomington. He then attended a novel global medical education program through the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. He went on to complete a neurology residency at University of Maryland Medical Center. This included training at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore VA Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospitals. He proceeded to the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles for a fellowship in sports neurology, neuromodulation and interventional pain management. In his time there he served as a consulting team physician to the Los Angeles Rams, Clippers, Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, Ducks, FIFA, NCAA, Team USA and Team HEAL, among others.

He returned to Bloomington in 2021 and continued on as Medical Officer of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods through 2023. Dr. Shaffer has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and has been presented several awards for both research and clinical care, including the Mohammad R. Torabi Outstanding Early Career Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Public Health. He has been invited to speak both locally and nationally on concussion and other sports neurology topics. Dr. Shaffer holds an Adjunct Faculty appointment through the IU School of Optometry and is completing his MBA through the Kelley School of Business. He enjoys golf, IU Athletics and spending time at the lake with his wife, daughters and golden retriever.

Did not see the nurse or doctor at time scheduled. Nurse was closer to time than doctor.
