Dr. Shaffer attended IU-Bloomington for his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, graduating with distinction. He then attended a novel global medical education program between the University of Queensland and Ochsner Clinic Foundation, spending two years in Brisbane, Australia and two years in New Orleans, LA. He received honors at UQ's Global Health Conference for his work on comparing health service delivery to indigenous populations in Australia, New Zealand, and North America. He has been recognized for projects on neuroimaging in schizophrenia and acute stroke at the UQ Centre for Advanced Imaging and Queensland Brain Institute. He was awarded a competitive Ochsner Post-doctoral Fellowship where he worked as an investigator on several major clinical stroke trials under the direction of Dr. Richard Zweifler. In New Orleans, he also began to cultivate interests in Sports Neurology, covering the NFL Saint's Trainer Symposium for Youth and the PGA's Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
He completed his neurology residency at University of Maryland Medical Center, with rotations at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore VA Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Hospitals. He proceeded to the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles for a fellowship in sports neurology, neuromodulation, and interventional pain management with Dr. Vernon Williams. He was a consulting or team physician to the Los Angeles Rams, Clippers, Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, Ducks, Kings, PGA Tour, FIFA, Galaxy, USC Trojans and several others. He is acting medical officer for the PGA's Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods and sideline concussion consultant for the Indiana Hoosiers Football Team. He has been presented several awards for research and clinical care, including the Mohammad R. Torabi Outstanding Early Career Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Public Health. He loves IU Athletics, golf, and spending time at the lake with his wife and daughters.
