A light in every moment: celebrating 2026 Melin award recipient Carmen Fabian Pine

Hope takes many forms in healthcare. Sometimes it is found in breakthrough treatments. Just as often, it is made real through the steady, compassionate presence of someone who shows up each day ready to care for others in meaningful ways.

Each year, the Dr. John R. Melin Award honors IU Health Methodist Hospital Facilities or EVS team members who go above and beyond in service to patients, families, and colleagues.

Made possible by a gift from the late Dr. John R. Melin and his wife, Virginia, the award recognizes one Methodist Hospital team member each year who consistently exceeds expectations through dedication, professionalism, and care.

Nominated by fellow team members, recipients are recognized for their behind-the-scenes impact, support of colleagues, and everyday excellence. To be eligible, a team member must have served at IU Health Methodist Hospital for at least three years.

IU Health Foundation is proud to recognize Carmen Fabian Pine, an EVS associate in the Methodist Emergency Department, where she has faithfully served for the past six years.

Carmen was nominated by ER nurse Carol Axtell, who, like so many of her colleagues, has seen firsthand the difference Carmen makes every day.

In a fast-paced environment where every second matters, Carmen helps create the conditions for healing. Every room she prepares, every detail she tends to, and every moment she steps in to support her team contributes to a safer, more compassionate experience for patients and families when they need it most.

What makes Carmen extraordinary is the way she turns everyday responsibilities into acts of care. She notices what others might miss, steps in before she is asked, and stays a little longer to help a teammate succeed. Through these simple but powerful actions, she brings calm, dignity and reassurance to moments that can feel uncertain.

Because of Carmen, patients feel more at ease, families feel cared for and her colleagues know they are supported no matter what the day brings.

Like those honored before her, Carmen reminds us that hope is not always loud. More often, it is built quietly, in prepared spaces, helping hands and moments of genuine care.

That is the difference Carmen makes. That is the hope she brings to life.

Next April, consider nominating a colleague for the Dr. John R. Melin Award. Nomination details, including the link to nominate, will be shared in the Daily and Connect.
