A victory lap for recovery: Physical therapist and patient reunite ahead of Indy 500

On May 12, 2026, a powerful reunion brought together the people who helped save Sarah Shore-Beck’s life and support her recovery. Ahead of a special honor at this year’s Indianapolis 500, where she will fly into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to deliver the ceremonial green flag, Shore-Beck returned to reconnect with the care team and first responders who played a role in her journey.

Among them was Alyssa Emata, a physical therapist with IU Health Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation. Emata supported Shore-Beck during her recovery following a serious car accident in 2025, a story first shared in From classroom to care: a full-circle journey of healing. In that earlier story, Shore-Beck, a professor, reunited with her former student turned therapist, highlighting a connection built on trust and encouragement.

The reunion gathered the full continuum of care, from the good Samaritans first on scene to the Lifeline flight crew, firefighters, trauma teams and rehabilitation staff. “It was incredibly meaningful and emotional,” Emata says. “As healthcare providers, we often only see one chapter of a patient’s story. Being able to witness the full picture and celebrate how far Sarah has come was very special.”

Outside of the clinic, Emata saw firsthand how far Shore-Beck has progressed. Now walking independently, she recently completed a 5K, a milestone that once felt out of reach. “It was amazing to see her thriving,” Emata says. “Her hard work, faith and perseverance are inspiring.”

For Emata, the day served as a reminder of the impact of teamwork and compassionate care. For Shore-Beck, it marked a celebration of resilience and the people who helped make her recovery possible.
