Defying Murphy’s Law with IU Health Bloomington Oncology experts

Kathryn Murphy is facing cancer for the second time in just six years.

After originally battling and overcoming triple-negative breast cancer in 2019, she unexpectedly received a lung cancer diagnosis in early 2025.

A persistent cough brought her in for a lung scan, which found a spot on her lung that turned out to be cancerous.

With the oncologist who had supported her through her breast cancer journey having retired, she was overwhelmed with the process of finding a new doctor and initially decided to seek care outside of Bloomington.

She quickly became dissatisfied, especially after being advised to undergo an aggressive surgery.

Filled with uncertainty, Murphy reached out to Fred Wu, MD, PhD, the radiation oncologist who treated her during her breast cancer.

He recommended she see Jacqueline Joyce, MD, in Bloomington for a second opinion and followed up with several phone calls, ensuring she was receiving the best possible care.

“Dr. Wu was just adamant to save me,” said Murphy.

She also shares that she couldn’t be happier with the care she’s received from Joyce and is incredibly grateful for Wu’s persistence.

“They treat me so well,” she said. “And from what I see with all the other patients, everybody's treated with care and respect.”

Going through cancer the second time has been a much different experience for Murphy.

“This time around has been a walk in the park compared to the breast cancer,” Murphy shared. “Everything's been great, we just take one day at a time and pray for the best and prepare for the worst.”

Throughout her treatment, Murphy found comfort in the joking and lighthearted moments she shared with various members of her care team.

“Our name is Murphy, and if it can go wrong, it will,” she laughed. “But my husband and I just can't say enough about how we've been treated at IU Health.”

Last week, Murphy wrapped up her final treatments with a positive attitude and a smile on her face.
