Home Sleep Apnea Care: All at-home test leads to better rest
IU Health patients eager to improve their sleep health can now do so without leaving home. IU Health’s new Home Sleep Apnea Care test offers a sleep apnea screening process and treatment options at-home from start to finish. This new option includes an On-Demand Virtual Visit with a provider and disposable test equipment shipped to the home, potentially eliminating the need for overnight testing in an IU Health Sleep Disorders Center or equipment return like a traditional home sleep test, for eligible patients.
“This new sleep test option will change the way patients get the sleep care they need,” says Joshua Barzilai, DO, MBA, service line leader, sleep medicine and EOHS. “Offering patients this remote sleep testing option entirely from home allows us to meet more patients where they are at, in the comfort of their own homes, across the entire state.”
The process begins with a sleep screening. If the sleep screening indicates a high probability of having Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), IU Health’s Sleep Medicine team will coordinate testing device shipment to your home, a review of the testing process and interpretation of the testing data. Once the study is complete, the IU Health Sleep Medicine team will contact you to schedule a virtual visit with a sleep provider to review the results and understand your next steps for care.
The virtual sleep screening through a virtual visit costs $59 self-pay, or you can bill insurance; the sleep study will be billed separately through insurance. Those who do not qualify for the all at-home sleep test, due to insurance requirements or health conditions, will have alternative options offered by their care team.
This new offering not only enhances the patient experience by minimizing the need to return home sleep test equipment and reduce travel need, but it also helps fulfill IU Health’s vision of making Indiana one of the nation’s healthiest states.
“An entirely at-home sleep test process means we can reach and support more patients anywhere across the state,” says Mario Barrios-Chávez, MBA, statewide director, integrated Sleep & Respiratory Therapy (RT) Durable Medical Equipment (DME) services. “Patients in locations outside of our IU Health footprint or far from our IU Health Sleep Disorders Centers are no longer limited by their distance to receive the best care designed for them.”
