Hope, moving sooner: How clinical trials at IU Health are changing lives

When someone you love is facing a serious illness, time feels different.

Days stretch longer. Questions come faster than answers. And above all, there is a quiet but urgent hope — for something more. More options. More progress. More time.

At Indiana University Health, clinical trials are helping meet that moment — bringing promising new therapies to patients sooner, across some of the most complex conditions affecting Hoosiers today, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurological and mental health disorders.

One year ago, on May 20 — National Clinical Trials Day — a transformative gift set a bold vision in motion, advancing healthcare discovery for patients in Indiana and around the world. Today, that vision is becoming reality. Through the IU Health Clinical Research Initiative, anchored within the Tobias–Lechleiter Institute for Clinical Innovation, research is moving faster and reaching more people.

In just twelve months, this system-wide effort has strengthened partnerships, enhanced coordination and expanded support for researchers across multiple disciplines, helping ensure that discoveries do not remain in laboratories, but reach patients who need them now.

Across Indiana, that progress is already being felt, in deeply personal ways.

Alzheimer’s: Advancing Answers, Expanding Hope

At IU Health, Alzheimer’s care is guided by a simple but powerful goal: helping patients access answers and hope — sooner.

Innovation is not separate from care, it is part of it. New therapies, diagnostic tools and clinical trials are seamlessly integrated into the patient experience, giving individuals access to emerging options in real time, not years down the road.

With more than 13 active clinical trials, IU Health is expanding what is possible, advancing earlier diagnosis, accelerating new treatments and helping patients maintain independence longer. Across Indiana, individuals can participate in trials close to home, supported every step of the way by dedicated teams who guide patients and families with clarity, compassion and expertise.

Here, the future of Alzheimer’s care is not something to wait for, it is already taking shape.

Treatment-Resistant Depression: A New Path Forward

For individuals living with treatment-resistant depression, the journey can feel long and uncertain, marked by years of therapies that may not bring relief.

At IU Health, a new path forward is emerging.

A groundbreaking 20-site clinical trial is exploring deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a potential treatment for patients who have not responded to traditional approaches. By delivering targeted electrical signals to specific areas of the brain, DBS aims to restore balance in the circuits that regulate mood — offering a new option where few have existed.

This work reflects a powerful shift toward precision medicine, tailoring treatment to each patient’s unique brain activity.

It also brings opportunity closer to home. With trial sites across Indiana, more patients can access this innovative research without leaving their communities.

If successful, this approach could redefine how severe depression is treated, opening the door to new therapies and new hope, for those who need it most.

Because even when every other option has been exhausted, innovation can create a way forward.

The Role of Philanthropy: Fueling Hope

This progress does not happen on its own.

Support for neuroscience at IU Health is advancing care for patients living with Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, depression and other complex brain disorders, fueling clinical trials where options are limited.

Philanthropic investment in clinical trials across IU Health extends that impact even further — strengthening the infrastructure that accelerates discovery in neurology, cancer, heart disease and other critical areas.

Together, these efforts ensure innovation reaches patients sooner — expanding access to new therapies and bringing hope to more families across Indiana.

Every gift removes barriers.
Every investment accelerates discovery.
Every act of generosity brings hope within reach.

In just one year, IU Health has transformed vision into meaningful progress, but this is only the beginning.

With continued support, more patients will find what they need most: answers, options and hope.

Because when innovation moves faster, hope does too.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies in which real people participate as volunteers. These trials help researchers develop new treatments and medications for diseases and conditions.
