Infusion nurse makes a difference through meaningful relationships

For four years, infusion nurse Emilee Goon has built meaningful relationships with patients at the IU Health West Cancer Center while providing specialized cancer care. She says the supportive, collaborative team environment is what makes her role rewarding and keeps her passionate about her work.
For Emilee Goon, a registered nurse at the IU Health West Cancer Center, work feels like a second home. Goon has been part of the team for four years, serving as an infusion nurse and building meaningful connections with patients and colleagues alike.
The role of an infusion nurse differs from traditional bedside care. It includes managing lab work, administering intravenous (IV) therapies and monitoring for side effects or changes in care plans. Because many patients receive treatment on a regular schedule, Goon has the opportunity to form lasting relationships and provide consistent support throughout their care journey.
“Our patients care about us as much as we care about them. We get to know their families or if they have big events going on. I love that it's very rewarding, and it's very humbling every day,” Goon says.
Goon credits her team for creating a supportive environment that benefits both patients and staff. Their diverse experiences and shared commitment to care help foster a strong sense of collaboration.
“We all come from different backgrounds, but we all bring in unique strengths that really complement one another. We’re here for the patients and each other, and our patients actually comment on that every day. They can tell how great of a team we have, how we’re all willing to help each other,” she explains.
For Goon, the combination of patient relationships and a collaborative team continues to make her role meaningful each day. “I've been here four years, and I still love my job,” she says. “I feel like that says a lot.”
