For eight years, Jackie Riley served her country in the Air Force. Now, she serves her community as a registered nurse on the Paoli Adult Med-Surg Step-down Unit.
“What drove me to healthcare was working in the Air Force at the hospital,” she explains. “I loved helping people and making a difference. At that time, I knew that it was something I wanted to pursue more.”
This veteran and DAISY Award winner knows how important it is to work as a team, even if it’s not her main team.
“Even though she is not fluent in obstetrics, Jackie has jumped in several times to help with answering call lights, passing dietary trays, administering medications, drawing blood for labs, placing IVs, getting vitals and so much more,” says one of her award nominators.
“We have a great team here, and we all work together, and that is what makes working here wonderful,” shares Riley. “Med-Surg, you never know what you will get that day—every day is different and I like that.”

Another nominator, a patient, described Riley as an angel who went above and beyond to help keep them occupied and comfortable. This included charging their phone, getting them “crafty things” to focus on and more.

“She was always willing to take time out of her busy schedule,” says the nominator. “She is the type of nurse you need.”
Being in the hospital is typically a difficult time, which is why Jackie strives to be that shoulder to cry on, person to laugh with and someone to talk to for patients.
“The most important thing for nurses to know is that no matter how hard your day may seem or how hard the job may be, you are making a difference. You are helping someone. You may be the reason someone smiles today. You may be the reason someone lives today. So just breathe and do your best.”
