IU Health Bloomington Cardiology team performed its first cardiac ablation using the Volt Pulse Field Ablation system, expanding access to advanced, minimally invasive treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib) in south central Indiana.

On Monday, Oct. 19, the IU Health Bloomington Cardiology team performed its first atrial fibrillation (Afib) ablation procedure using the Volt Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) system.

This innovative treatment offers patients with Afib a new minimally invasive option for managing their heart condition.

"Atrial fibrillation is an extremely common condition," said Cardiac Electrophysiologist John Strobel, MD. He explains that it can cause rapid, irregular heartbeats, which can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue.

Traditionally, AFib ablation procedures use a small catheter inserted into the heart to create scars in the tissue that is causing the irregular rhythm. This is typically done using extreme heat, cold, or radiofrequency waves.

The Volt PFA system takes a different approach, using precise electrical pulses to target only the cells causing the issue while protecting the healthy tissue around them.

This advanced approach is a more precise and efficient procedure compared to a traditional ablation. As a result, patients may spend less time under anesthesia and have a smoother recovery as their heart returns to a normal rhythm.

"The Atrial Fibrillation Program at IU Health Bloomington Hospital strives to bring the latest treatments to our patients and we are pleased to bring this new technology to individuals with atrial fibrillation,” said Dr. Strobel.

By offering this leading-edge technology, the IU Health Bloomington Cardiology team continues to expand access to advanced cardiovascular care in south central Indiana, bringing innovative treatment options closer to home for patients.
