Cancer Care
Cancer care includes a variety of treatments, systematic therapies, surgery and clinical trials.
Carla Walsh has been a nurse in IU Health North’s Riley Children’s Health neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) since the hospital opened in 2005. She felt called to take care of the babies and their families.
However, in 2023, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She sought care from the IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center, undergoing a double mastectomy and radiation. While she was receiving treatment, her team in the NICU went all out to support her. From planning excursions to raising money and even surprising her on her final day of radiation, her team members wanted her to know they were with her.
“They went above and beyond for me,” Walsh says. “It’s really kind of what got me through it."
