Family medicine physician finds purpose in rural care

In Monticello, Toluwanimi Oyedele, MD, cares for patients across generations, building trust through listening, connection and community.

For Toluwanimi Oyedele, MD, the path to medicine began with a simple but powerful desire: to do more.

Growing up surrounded by caregivers serving underserved communities, she saw firsthand the gaps in access to care—and the difference even limited resources could make. As a young caregiver herself, those experiences sparked a curiosity and determination that would shape her future.

“I just wanted to know as much as possible so I could provide even better care for my patients,” Oyedele says.

Caring across generations

That pursuit of knowledge ultimately led her to family medicine–obstetrics, a specialty that allows her to care for patients across all stages of life. Today, in Monticello, she provides care that often spans generations—treating grandparents, parents and children within the same families.

For Oyedele, those relationships are at the heart of her work.

“If a whole family can put their care in your hands, that is a very big privilege,” she says.

Rooted in community

Her decision to practice in a rural community was intentional. Drawn to underserved areas, she sought a place where she could make a meaningful impact while building lasting connections with patients. In Monticello, she found exactly that—and more.

“It’s been my joy serving here,” Oyedele says.

She describes the community as welcoming and supportive, with patients who are deeply engaged in their care and a team environment that fosters collaboration and trust. That sense of connection extends beyond her patients to her colleagues, creating a workplace where she feels supported and valued.

The power of listening

At the center of Oyedele’s approach to care is a focus on listening—something she believes is essential to both accurate diagnosis and meaningful patient relationships.

“Listening goes a long way,” she says. “Many people just want to be heard.”

She takes time to get to know her patients, understanding that trust is built over time. Rather than trying to address everything in a single visit, she works alongside patients to make steady progress toward better health.

Finding balance

Outside of work, Oyedele prioritizes balance, making sure to find time for the things she enjoys— whether that’s cooking, gardening or spending time with family. She recognizes that caring for herself allows her to better care for others.

“Mental health and work-life balance are both very crucial,” she says.

An important reminder

As she reflects on being recognized for Doctors’ Day, Oyedele admits the recognition came as a surprise.

Working quietly in a rural community, she does not always expect her work to be seen. But for her, the recognition serves as a reminder that even small, everyday moments of care matter—and that the work she does for her patients does not go unnoticed.
