Virtual rehab program helps survivor regain strength

In 2009, Brenda Raver was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

She remained cancer-free for eight years, but a PET scan in 2017 showed the cancer had metastasized to her upper right chest and underarm area. After numerous rounds of treatment, Raver developed lymphedema, neuropathy, and issues with balance and strength. She also found it increasingly difficult to perform everyday activities, including playing with her grandchildren.

Because of her medical history and family history, Raver's oncologist referred her to a cardiologist. The cardiologist recommended IU Health's Virtual Cardiac Cancer Rehabilitation program, a service offered through IU Health Ball Cardiac Rehabilitation.

The program is designed to improve quality of life and help patients manage treatment side effects by increasing fitness among cardio-oncology patients. Participants receive one-on-one telehealth sessions, individualized exercise plans, virtual education, monitoring and goal-setting support. Through an online app, patients can follow exercise programs from home that are tailored to their specific health needs.

"Since I began the virtual rehab program earlier this year, I have definitely noticed improvements," Raver said. "I needed to be more active, and this has helped with my movement, balance and flexibility."
