Obesity care team brings multidisciplinary approach to weight management

Jeff Usko was facing three different health challenges when his gastroenterologist referred him to the bariatric and medical weight loss team at IU Health North Hospital. "I had what's called achalasia which was making it hard for me to swallow. I also had a hernia and I was overweight as well so Dr. [Amy] Holmstrom and I talked about taking care of everything at once," said Jeff.

Dr. Holmstrom is a general surgeon who is just one member of Jeff's multidisciplinary team. "After a patient consults with me, we get them connected with dietitians, an exercise physiologist and a psychologist," said Dr. Holmstrom. "I tell all of my patients this- weight is way more complicated than what you put in your mouth and how much you move around. It's not that simple and we have a really good team here ready to help."
