With a mother who was a family medicine doctor, Tobias Rumschlag, MD, grew up knowing what the life of a family medicine practitioner looked like. While in school, he was always interested in classes related to science and physiology.
Knowing he wanted to work in medicine, he decided to work in the outpatient setting of family medicine because he enjoyed caring for and getting to know children as well as adults.
“It’s super rewarding,” says Rumschlag while discussing the opportunity his job gives him to build long-term relationships with patients.
Rumschlag recently completed the Family Medicine residency program in Lafayette through IU Health and the IU School of Medicine, which he says he had an excellent experience with. He feels that the residency program offers a good environment and great people to learn from.
The IU School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency program at IU Health Arnett is a three-year community-based program that offers comprehensive training in family medicine. The program helps prepare residents for providing patient-centered care that integrates team-based approaches and population health strategies.
Residents train in a modern ambulatory care facility located on the IU Health campus in Lafayette. This setting allows for integrated learning experiences across inpatient, obstetrics and ambulatory care settings. As an unopposed program—residents are not competing with residents from other specialties for resources, procedures or learning opportunities within the facility—in a community setting, residents benefit from increased autonomy and hands-on experience while still having access to the extensive resources and guidance provided by the larger IU School of Medicine network.
Values Leadership Awards Nomination
After growing up in a rural town, Rumschlag finds that he likes the company of people who reside in smaller communities. Rumschlag also understands that smaller communities often have less access to medical services, and he values practicing in more underserved areas. With the vision of working in a smaller city like Lafayette, he also appreciated the fact that the locale of his residency mirrored his preferred work location.
Another reason he chose to stay after his residency was IU Health’s size and working environment. He feels that many people he works with are friendly and helpful. A large health system like IU Health ensures that Rumschlag and his patients will have access to a large variety of resources and services.
Rumschlag says he feels excited to begin practicing, helping guide patients through their medical journeys and following in his mother’s footsteps as a family medicine doctor.
