From layoff to lifesaver

Tammy Chiafos never planned on becoming a respiratory therapist.

“Believe it or not, I used to babysit for my friend Nikki’s daughter. Nikki was a respiratory therapist and said I should go back to school and become one, because it was a fun job and she made decent money,” she says. The idea lingered in her mind until the 2008 recession led to an unexpected career change.

After being laid off, Chiafos visited the unemployment office and learned about an opportunity to return to school.

“At first, I had no intention of doing it but finally decided to go for it! When they asked me what I wanted to do, I said, ‘I guess I will become a respiratory therapist!’” she says.

Chiafos took her first steps by job shadowing at IU Health White Memorial Hospital, before enrolling in school and never looking back.

Her dedication paid off quickly.

“I was hired with IU Health right out of college. I had my interview the day after I graduated. A week later I was driving home from taking the first of three board exams (which I passed with flying colors) when I got the call from HR offering me the job. I was so excited,” she says.

Chiafos has been part of the IU Health team since June 4, 2012.

Now an advanced respiratory therapist at IU Health Arnett Hospital, Chiafos finds fulfillment in the bonds she forms with patients.

“I love taking care of my patients...It is so rewarding to see the progress they have made from the therapies that we use to help them get better. Knowing that I had a part in that is amazing,” she says.

That connection with patients also brings its challenges, especially when they are at end-of-life.

“Forming a relationship with my patient and their family and knowing they are ready to move on from this life can be hard,” Chiafos says. “It’s like losing a family member yourself. It is always an honor when my patient thanks me for helping take care of them and is at peace when they decide ‘it’s time’.”

Chiafos is glad she has built her career for the past 13-plus years at IU Health.

“I love working at IU Health Arnett and the opportunities it has given me to advance in my career,” she says. “I have a great manager and wonderful co-workers. The teamwork and friendships I have made over the years working here have made my job experience even better and I am grateful every day.”
