IU Health Methodist Hospital is known for complete expert care in emergency medicine for both adults and children. We are prepared with rapid care protocols for patients experiencing traumatic injury and symptoms of possible heart attack and stroke.

We are the largest emergency medicine training center in the state and, in conjunction with the Indiana University School of Medicine, we are one of the nation’s top-ranked academic teaching hospitals. Our exceptional dedication to quality patient care helped our emergency department earn a 2012 Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association for high performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and results.

Our full range of emergency care services, include:

  • A Level I Trauma Center uniquely equipped to serve patients who have encountered any type of trauma.
  • A Level I Vascular Emergency Program, delivering urgent care for sudden aortic syndromes, including thoracic (chest) aortic aneurysms and/or dissections, and ruptured/symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysms.
  • IU Health LifeLine ground and air transportation, operating the most advanced mobile intensive care units in the industry.
  • A nationally recognized Medical Toxicology Program and the Indiana Poison Center, the only center in the state certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
  • An Intensive Diagnostic Treatment Unit, for extended observation of patients who are too sick to go home, but not ill enough to be admitted. Fewer than one in six emergency facilities in the country have this unique service.

Our innovative emergency medicine services encompass every level of treatment for critically injured and seriously ill patients.

Level I Trauma Center

As a Level I Trauma Center, IU Health Methodist Hospital Emergency Medicine services include a full trauma staff and surgical team available on site 24 hours a day. Our trauma experts work hand-in-hand with our emergency team to help stabilize the patient during the critical phase immediately following injury. We lead both the state and the country in providing excellence in trauma care in the top fields of neuroscience, orthopedics, cardiovascular and transplant.

Level I Vascular Emergency Program

The Level I Vascular Emergency Program at IU Health Methodist Hospital delivers fast, streamlined care for patients experiencing sudden aortic symptoms including thoracic (chest) aortic aneurysms and/or dissections, and ruptured/symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysms. Our program also includes acute limb ischemia (lack of circulation to an arm or leg).

Medical Toxicology Program

The board certified toxicology experts at IU Health Methodist Hospital provide specialized evaluation and treatment for conditions such as acute and chronic toxicity, adverse drug reactions, criminal poisoning and workplace or environmental exposures.

Our diverse faculty members are leaders in occupational and environmental toxicology, neurotoxicology, pediatrics and emergency medicine. We bring innovative methods and expertise to the care of both adult and pediatric poison patients.

Indiana Poison Center

Located at IU Health Methodist Hospital, the Indiana Poison Center is the only regional poison information center in the state certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. We serve over six million people each year.

Our emergency telephone service and information resource center is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Our certified, tenured staff of poison specialists is at the forefront of care with a toxicosurveillance program and expertise in the bath salt and spice epidemics.

Forensic Medicine

Our Forensic Nurse Examiner program is the largest in the city and features registered nurses who have completed advanced clinical training in the nursing care and treatment of patients who report being victims of violence.

Services include a screening program for alcohol use, sexual assault examinations and evaluation and treatment following adult abuse, child abuse and physical assault.
