Utilities Project FAQs

Español / မြန်မာ / Hakha

To prepare for the IU Health downtown Indianapolis hospital build, several large underground utility lines must be moved, and this extensive underground utility work will require road closures.

The new downtown hospital planning team teamed up with the City of Indianapolis to abbreviate the construction schedule and minimize the impact on traffic as much as possible.

The first phase of utility relocation work will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Staging of heavy equipment and construction of a temporary access road to the IU Health Methodist Emergency Department will occur in the weeks leading up to the project.

Lane restrictions related to this pre-work began Monday, Aug. 16. Full road closures will not occur until Sept. 22.

During phase one of the utility work, a portion of Missouri Street, Senate Avenue and 16th Street will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022. See the full project map below for more details. Visit this page often for updates on detour routes.

During phase two of the utility work, the intersection of Capitol Avenue and 16th Street will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021 – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022.

During phase three of the utility work, a portion of Capitol Avenue will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021- Monday, March 7, 2022.

A temporary road will be open to Emergency Department patients and EMS vehicles on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 – Monday, March 7, 2022. This road is identified in yellow on the map above.

Lane restrictions due to temporary ED road construction will start Monday, Aug. 16.

  • One southbound lane on the west side of Capitol Ave. will be restricted from Monday, Aug. 16 –Wednesday, Aug. 25
  • One westbound lane on 16th St. will be restricted from Wednesday, Aug. 25 – Monday, Aug. 30
  • One eastbound lane on 16th St. will be restricted from Monday, Aug. 30 – Saturday, Sept. 4

IU Health Methodist Hospital patients and visitors can continue to use Parking Garage 1 or 2, both accessible off of Senate Ave.

IU Health Emergency Department patients can continue to use the Emergency Department lot, which is accessible from the north via the temporary access road off of Capitol Avenue and accessible via the south from Senate Ave. If the lot is full, patients will be directed to Parking Garage 1.

Radiation Therapy patients can continue to use the Radiation Therapy parking lot, which is accessible from the north via the temporary access road off of Capitol Avenue and accessible via the south from Senate Ave.

If the lot is full, patients will be directed to Parking Garage 1. Parking garage tickets will be validated. To find Radiation Therapy from Parking Garage 1: Take the parking garage elevators to the lower level, exit to the left and take the small flight of stairs outside. This will take you to the Radiation Therapy entrance off of 16th Street.

Patients may be dropped off or picked up at the main entrance (off of Senate Avenue) or as directed on the pre-visit information from your doctor’s office. All parking garages have elevators, stairs and reserved parking spaces for people with special parking needs. Garages are van accessible and are always monitored by IU Health security officers and cameras.

Our team of guest relations representatives and hospital volunteers will be happy to get you a wheelchair when you arrive at the hospital. Please ask any of our team members for assistance or visit the nearest information desk.
