Volunteer at IU Health West

Volunteers are an important part of IU Health West Hospital and help us achieve our mission of providing exceptional care. It is not necessary for you to have worked or volunteered in a healthcare setting before.

You only need a passion to serve others and a commitment to helping IU Health West Hospital make every guest's visit exceptional.

Participating in the care of others requires a special commitment to providing impeccable service and creating an experience our guests will not forget. As an integral part of IU Health West Hospital, all volunteers must be aware of our culture of service and our passionate commitment to exceeding the expectations of those we serve. This commitment is strengthened through our values: Purpose, Compassion, Excellence & Team.

Traditional Volunteers

Anyone 18 or older and not in school is considered a traditional volunteer. Traditional volunteers usually serve one three-hour shift per week, but some assignments have four-hour shifts. New volunteers must commit to at least a six-month assignment, although many of our volunteers have been dedicating their time to our patients for years.

Student Volunteers

Student volunteers are age 16-18 and in high school or 18 and over and in college. Students under age 18 may only volunteer in nonclinical areas. There are limited year-round shifts that are after school to 6 p.m. or weekends.

Team Member Volunteers

Full-time, part-time and supplemental team members of IU Health who have an interest in volunteering for IU Health West Hospital outside of their normal work hours and department should contact us for more information at 317.688.2927.

Your Commitment

Most volunteer positions at IU Health West Hospital require a minimum six-month commitment (minus family vacations, illness, or other special situations) unless otherwise noted. We assign volunteers to a specific department, day, and time to allow relationship building between team members and volunteers. We work to match volunteer interests with the needs of the hospital and patients.
