IU Health volunteers are one of our most valued resources. Volunteers bring our patients and their families comfort and aid throughout their hospital stay and healing process. We currently have volunteers across the state who give their time, talents and skill to IU Health facilities, patients and families.
Opportunities are available for students, adults and pets throughout Indiana. Many volunteers work in guest relations, gift shops, emergency rooms and on patient floors. We strive to find a volunteer opportunity that fits your interests and schedule and help you get the most out of your time with us by creating a positive, welcoming environment.
Volunteering at an IU Health facility provides fulfillment and a deeper connection to your community. Depending on which IU Health hospital you are volunteering, you may receive the following benefits, in addition to a sense of fulfillment and a chance to make a difference in a patient’s life:
- Free meals or a discount at hospital cafeterias
- Free flu shots or health screenings
- Educational opportunities
- Recognition awards
- Discounts at hospital gift shops
- Experience in a healthcare field

Fulfilling volunteer opportunities are available at Indiana University Health hospitals around the state and even from the comfort of your home. Our facilities offer opportunities for adults, students and even pets to make a difference at pivotal time in someone’s life.
Whether it is coloring with patients at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, delivering flowers to new moms at IU Health Arnett Hospital or cuddling babies in the NICU at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, we provide unique opportunities that fit your interests.
Patient & Family Advisory Councils
At IU Health, we strive to improve patient experience and provide high quality services. Our Patient & Family Advisory Councils are made up of former patients and their family members or friends throughout Indiana. The volunteers give us valuable feedback on healthcare topics and their experiences with IU Health. This feedback guides our decisions about how we provide care, what services we provide and how we can improve the patient experience.
The Patient & Family Advisory Councils are conducted entirely through email so it is convenient for you. Two or three times a month, we send you a short survey to complete. Your responses allow us to develop plans to make your experiences at IU Health better.
If you would like to join one of our Patient & Family Advisory Councils, please contact us at insiders@iuhealth.org.
No One Dies Alone
NODA is a vigil at the end of life, so that no one dies alone. The goal is to provide companionship and support for dying individuals, who are completely alone, having no family or community support.
Through the efforts of volunteers, NODA provides a reassuring presence to dying patients who would otherwise be alone.
With the support of nursing and chaplaincy team members, compassionate companions offer patients one of the most valuable human gifts – a dignified death.
