Jeff Bird, MD

President

Dr. Jeff Bird often recalls that he received his first paycheck from IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in 1984 as he began his family residency at the Muncie campus. He has been an active member of the medical community in Muncie ever since. He began as a private practice family physician, then moved on to director of the Family Medicine Residency Center, vice president of Operations to chief medical officer and finally chief operating office to president of IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Bird attended DePauw University and received his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Sue, their four children and three grandchildren. He is a Chicago Bears fan that loves to spend time outdoors with his family.

Mike Craig

Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

Mike Craig became the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer for the IU Health East Region, South Region and West Region in July 2024. 

He has been part of the IU Health team since July 2000, with roles including: 

  • Chief financial officer for the South Region and the regional physician group
  • Director of financial planning and reimbursement for the legacy Bloomington hospital 

Craig has also owned and operated MMI Healthcare Consulting LLC, providing specialized Medicare services to hospitals across the country, and was a partner with the healthcare financial consulting firm Olive, LLP.

Craig is a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.

Kreigh Cook

Chief Operating Officer

Kreigh was born and raised in Mt. Summitt, Indiana. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Olivet Nazarene University, as well as Doctor of Jurisprudence and Master of Health Administration degrees from Indiana University. After graduation, Kreigh returned home to East Central Indiana and has served in a variety of roles at IU Health Ball Hospital for the last 8 years, currently serving as Vice President, Chief Operating Officer. Kreigh is enthusiastic about living in, contributing to, and serving the communities within East Central Indiana. In his free time, he enjoys going to sporting events with his family and coaching youth basketball.

Pete Voss, MD

Chief Physician Executive

Dr. Pete Voss has been a member of the medical staff at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital since 1991. He is an obstetrician/gynecologist by training and is board certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Throughout his time at IU Health Dr. Voss served in various physician leadership roles, always bringing a fair and measured voice while advocating for the highest level of quality care for his patients. Dr. Voss earned his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and graduated with his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine. He resides in Muncie with his wife, Franky, and their three children.

Melissa Hicks, DNP, RN-BC, NE-BC

Chief Nursing Officer

Melissa Hicks is chief nursing officer for IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. She oversees more than 900 nurses in the East Region. She earned her doctorate in nursing practice and nursing leadership from the University of Indianapolis and is a graduate of the Indiana University-Kokomo nursing program.

Michelle Altobella

Vice President, Legal; Chief Privacy Officer

Michelle Altobella services as vice president and general counsel for IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and as chief privacy officer for IU Health. She has provided legal leadership at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for 15 years. Altobella is a graduate of University of Kentucky and earned her JD cum laude from Salmon P. Chase College of Law. In her free time, she likes to exercise in the hospital Fitness Center, spend time with her family and watch sporting events.

Brian Reed

Vice President of Human Resources

Before joining IU Health in 2017, Brian Reed served in the Operations Management Development Division within Toyota, developing and maintaining lean and efficient practices. Reed earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. In his free time, Reed enjoys time with his wife and children.

Ryan Johnston, MD, FACP

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Ryan Johnston serves as the chief medical officer for the East Region. Since 2005, Dr. Johnston has been a member of the medical staff at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He has served in several leadership roles with the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Inpatient Medicine and the Hospitalists Program.

Dr. Johnston earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Northwestern.
